Part of the reason I started studying China was because I really enjoyed Chinese film. And, like most Westerners, I was introduced to it primarily via China's fifth generation filmmakers, guys like Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou. Those two in particular have a way of making devastation and heartbreak so beautiful that you can't bring yourself to look away. There's really nothing else like it.
