Chinese around the world celebrate Dragon Boat Festival (端午節, Du?nw? Ji?) today by doing a variety of activities, including watching dragon boat races and eating zongzi (pyramid-shaped glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves).

I spent the weekend competing in the dragon boat competitions in Taipei city and county. While my team, Team Max, didn't win any top prizes, I enjoyed participating in the challenging, adrenaline-fueled, high speed races in which boats of 18 paddlers paddle 500 meters in a reenactment of the dragon boat race to rescue poet Qu Yuan who committed suicide by jumping into the Miluo River during the Zhou dynasty.

If you haven't seen dragon boat races before, I suggest you find a dragon boat race near you. While you're at it, make some zongzi to eat while watching the races.
